Reusable make up remover pads

Do you have a toweling dressing gown that’s seen better days or bathroom towels that need replacing?  Here’s an easy step by step to turn them into reusable make up remover pads.

Dressing gown and towels

You will need:

  • A toweling dressing gown or towels (put them through a hot wash before you begin)
  • Some cotton fabric – you could use an old cotton shirt
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (or you could sew by hand if you don’t have a machine)
You will need

Step 1 – cutting out

Cut up your dressing gown into big squares and layout flat. Overlay the cotton fabric on top and pin together.

Lay out fabric together

Step 2 – mark out the squares

For my re-usable pads, I made squares, but you could do rounds by drawing around a glass. For the squares, I measured out a grid of 9.5cm square and marked the fabric with a pencil.

Step 3 – the sewing bit

Next you’ll need to sew round the edges to stop the fraying. Best to use a narrow zig zag stitch. Use the pencil marks to guide you as the outer edge. If you’re hand sewing, you could cut out the shapes first and use a blanket stitch to seal off the edges.

Step 4 – cutting out

Once all the stitching has been done, it’s time to cut up. Now you can use the pencil marks to keep your cutting in between your stitching.

Step 5 – repeat

Keep going until you have a stack to use. Good to have a supply that means you have some on the go, while some are in the wash. You can wash them on a hot wash – good idea to put them in a pillowcase in the washing machine, to keep them together. You could make extra for friends too – use string or ribbon to bundle them up. Make a bigger version for a flannel or cleaning cloth.
