How to make a denim organiser

This is a great way to re-use those jeans that have worn out or simply don’t fit anymore! Turn them into an organiser – the pockets can be very useful for tidying up a kids bedroom, for example organising shoes, toys, lego, scarves, jewellery etc.

Hang it on the back of the door, a wall or make one double sided and hang it in the wardrobe. This blog will show you how to put one together, but it’s up to you on how you might want to add embellishments – there’s some ideas at the end.

a pile of jeans

You will need:

  • 2-3 pairs of jeans
  • a hanger
  • scissors
  • pins
  • a tape measure
  • a sewing machine (or needle and thread if you want to make by hand)
  • embellishments (optional)
You will need

Step 1 – cutting out

Firstly, you’ll need to measure the width of the opening over your hanger. Mine was 14.5 inches, so I made the width of my panel a big wider to allow for a hem.

Next, cut out some trouser legs to make your base panel. I needed three legs to provide me enough width. You can always add to the length if you want a longer organiser.

Step 2 – sewing together the base panel

With the right sides together, pin your leg pieces together to make one larger panel – this is your base panel.

Next, you need to hem the sides and bottom of your base panel as shown in the diagram.

Step 3 – adding the pockets

Next step is to add some pockets to your base panel. I used the back pockets of the jeans and added six of them to my panel. I used a zig-zag stitch to add them to the base panel.

Step 4 – insert hanger

Next step is to sew your panel to your hanger. You need to fold over the top of the panel over the hanger and sew into place.

Step 5 – add embellishment

I kept it simple and added some decorative pom poms to mine. You could add patches, lace, sequins, badges etc. All to personalise your organiser for you or your recipient. My nephew is going to have this one – the blue pom poms will go with his under water theme in his room.
