How to make an Easter bunny decoration
Here’s a guide to making an Easter bunny decoration. I’ve made mine mini size, but you could make it wreath size for your front door perhaps. I’ve used thick string, but you could also use chunky wool or strips of fabric. The thicker the fabric, the quicker you could make these.
This step by step guide makes a bunny decorations, but you could adapt the colour to yellow for an Easter chick. Or try rainbow colours for a Unicorn (suggestion thanks to my niece!).
You will need:
- Cardboard – I used a cereal box
- Thick string or strips of fabric – I used cream cord, but you could also cut up strips of fabric, like a pillowcase or a T shirt.
- Scissors
- A piece of cream and pink fabric – or you could use white card or paper and colour in the pink bit.
- Glue
- A pom pom maker – or if you don’t have one, use card (I’ll show you how to make a pom pom using cardboard in this guide)
Step 1 – cutting out the cardboard
First step is to cut out the cardboard into the following shapes:
- Two bunny ear shapes – mine were 12cm tall, 5cm wide at base
- One cardboard circle for the wreath shape/main circle – I used a 12cm diameter lid for the outer size and an 8cm lid for the inner circle size
- Two small cardboard circles to make a pom pom (if you don’t have a pom pom maker). I used a 4.5cm size pom pom maker. Or if you’re using cardboard, I drew round an 8cm lid for the outer size and a 3cm coin for the inner size.
Step 2 – Making the circle wreath bit
Take the main circle bit of cardboard as your main wreath bit of your creation. You’ll need to cut the cord or fabric strips into pieces about 20cm long. If you’re making a bigger version, you’ll need longer cord/fabric pieces.
Next take one piece of string/fabric at a time and tie them onto the cardboard circle as shown in the picture. Work your way round the whole circle.
Once you’ve worked all the way round the cardboard ring, trim the cord so it’s a bit shorter. I also worked the string out so it looked more fluffy.
Step 3 – Making a pom pom
If you have a pom pom maker, use your string/fabric to make a small pom pom as your bunny tail.
If you don’t have a pom pom maker, here’s how to make one with cardboard.
Firstly, put the two pieces of cardboard together. Then wrap the cord/fabric strips around the whole circle as shown in the picture. Keep going until you can fill the circle no more!
Next, you’re going to snip the cord/fabric all the way around the edge as shown.
Tie a piece of thread/string around the middle of the circle, in between the two pieces of cardboard. Then remove the cardboard.
Trim the pom pom so it’s neat. Attach your pom pom to the wreath circle you’ve already made.
Step 4 – Add the bunny ears
You could use some white card or paper here and colour the pink bits. Or I glued some fabric to the cardboard.
Now glue your ears in place to the wreath shape.
Add a hanging loop. You could make a few of these to make a garland. Or perhaps a bigger version to hang on your door.
